The original plan for this pool was to implement an electric pump that agitated the water into standing waves, but this final version appears to rotate the water's surface.
Description: 1991 ABC B-Roll footage shot in Jim Sanborn's studio depicts a pre-production model of "Kryptos" and its related elements. This maquette was submitted to the CIA Fine Arts Council to demonstrate the plans for the artwork to be installed at CIA Headquarters in Langley, VA. The final work was modified from this model, although the general layout of the elements appears to be consistent with the original concept.

The granite strata depict a compass rose; layered between them is a sheet of copperplate with groupings of Morse Code on them.
